Dear Brethren and Co-Workers in Christ:
Greetings from Grover Beach, California.
We have been reviewing a couple of emails we received related to possible locations for the Feast of Tabernacles for North America for 2025. Once we narrow it down further, we will consider sending out requests for proposals, probably starting late next month.
In disturbing news, we continue to deal with malware reinfections, despite having purchased software that will clear it and supposedly will stop it. We have been working with that malware company, our hosting service, and others to try to resolve this–but it is still not truly fixed. Because of that, we have temporarily halted receiving and uploading more translations of our English language booklet, The Gospel of the Kingdom of God. However, we are still striving to improve our translations despite the malware issues we are facing. We have purchased additional protective software, but that has only partially helped. This is something you may wish to pray about that we will have the wisdom to be led to the best solution for this.
On other matters, the recommended sermon for this week has already generated over 900 views on YouTube. It is titled: Christians say No to Christmas. Two reasons for putting out a sermon on that topic include 1) Christmas is the most widely observed holiday in the world, so there is interest in people wondering about it (cf. Isaiah 58:1), and 2) this information gives our members “meat in due season” (Matthew 24:45) so we will always, “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15, KJV).
Africa Updates
A man in Burundi, who is with us, is currently editing the Kirundi version of The Gospel of the Kingdom of God for us. He may also later be able to do an audio recording that we might be able to place on our Bible News Prophecy International internet radio site.
Evangelist Evans Ochieng sent the following report related to Kenya:
Pastor Dr Bob,
Today I was in Nyakach. They are in starvation with hunger. I took some bags of maize to them. And widow xxxxxx had a problem of house. I took to her 12 bags of cement to assist her to plaster her house which fallen down. They were really thankful for the bags of maize that they received. I also gave 5 bags of cement to plaster the floor of the Hall in Nyakach. The service was very good. Next Sabbath I’ll be in got Kachola where we are going to have youth camp.
The Bible teaches:
27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:25)
Supporting widows and putting on youth camps in Africa are ways we work to fulfill James 1:27.
We are expecting to have multiple youth camps in Africa (Kenya, Malawi, and Mozambique) with one or more starting today. Please pray about them that they would help the youth “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) and remain committed enough to the truth to endure to the end (cf. Matthew 24:13).
Video Screen Change
A couple of years ago, we changed our primary sermonette video format to a question and answer session with myself and Steve Dupuie. Since he is in Michigan and I in California, we have used the Skype platform to record the audio and video. However, one issue with that is that it sometimes pushes one of us nearly off the screen.
To address these Steve Dupuie and Bill Wedekind suggested we try to put up black bars which ends up better centering us. But, that reduces us on the screen. Anyway, we have tried this for the latest sermonette video which you can see below:
Great Tribulation Trends 2025
“Bringing you news and analysis of world events in light of Bible prophecy.” This is a mandate of the Continuing Church of God. World events are speeding toward the final chapter of mankind’s attempt at utopia. Is the Great Tribulation right around the corner? Many false Biblical prognosticators have led us to believe that the Great Tribulation will begin in 2025. Are they right? Dr. Thiel uses scripture to shine the light of Biblical prophecy on their prognostications to prove that these false prognosticators are still false. Is the election of Donald Trump a world event that that signals the start of the Great Tribulation? Once again, Dr. Thiel uses the light of Bible prophecy to highlight the fact that some of Donald Trump’s actions may bring us closer to start of that day. But still, it won’t happen in 2025. So, what events will herald the start of the Great Tribulation? Are some of those events close to taking place? When the Great Tribulation begins, what will be the fate of the United States? What is the “pride of its power”? Will the “pride of its power” be broken? What will cause the fall of the United States? Might the presidency of Donald Trump be directly involved in breaking the pride of the power of the United States? Dr. Thiel goes directly to the Bible to shine the light of God’s Word on all these questions. The verses referred to and quoted from the book of Daniel are especially intriguing. If you live in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or the United Kingdom, you will definitely want to watch this podcast.
Here is a link to our video: Great Tribulation Trends 2025.
While this is not perfect, we expect to make some other adjustments as we strive to improve the look of our presentations–including possibly moving away from Skype.
Year-End Income Tax Matters
We are getting close to the end of the Roman calendar year. Those who live in the United States, in order to have their contributions eligible for tax deduction for calendar year 2024, need to send electronic or regular mail donations no later than December 31, 2024. For those who physically mail donations, they legally must be postmarked by December 31, 2024 to be eligible for deductibility for 2024.
All contributions received via US mail for residents of the United States are to be processed for the tax year based upon the postmarked date on the envelopes.
For contributions received via PayPal, we use the date that PayPal gives us.
The PayPal donation link for the USA is at: https://www.ccog.org/donations/
In Canada the rules may be slightly different for mailed and other contributions, so if you want the tax deduction for calendar year 2024, they likely also need to be made before the end of the calendar year to the CCOG office in Canada.
(In New Zealand, they use a March 31st date to end their tax year.)
Suggested Sabbath Services
Here is a suggested Sabbath day service for our scattered brethren and other interested people for the Last Great Day Sabbath service:
- 2-3 hymns (our songbook, The Bible Hymnal, contains the materials from the 1974 Bible Hymnal from the old WCG with new covers, plus ten additional hymns; there is also some Choral Accompaniment online).
- Opening prayer.
- Sermonette: Great Tribulation Trends 2025. Other sermonettes are available at our Prophecy channel on BitChute https://www.bitchute.com/channel/prophecy/
- Announcements (if any; though for many it will be this letter) and one hymn.
- The suggested sermon is: Christians say No to Christmas. Other sermons are also available at the COGTube channel on BitChute https://www.bitchute.com/channel/cogtube/
- Final hymn.
- Closing prayer.
Note: If you have a slow internet connection, you can watch these by starting the video, then below it (and towards the right) look for an outline of a gear–if you click on that, it will allow the YouTube video to be played with lower video quality, but at least it will not stop often–you can select a quality as low as 144p. If your internet connection is still too slow (as my home one is) and/or you prefer audio messages to audio-visuals ones, go to the YouTube link for the message, click on SHOW MORE related to the description. You will then see something that says, “Download MP3.” Below that is a link to an MP3 file. Most computers (and even some cellular telephones) will allow MP3 files to be downloaded and played. This is an option we have made available (but we are also looking into ways to improve that as well)–and, of course, we have written article options. Some people have found that if their internet connections are not fast enough, that they can simply listen to the messages that are found at the Bible News Prophecy online radio channel.
IN CASE YOU DO NOT RECEIVE A ‘LETTER TO THE BRETHREN’ FOR ANY WEEK, REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE MANY SERMON MESSAGES ON THE ContinuingCOG channel AND MANY SERMONETTE MESSAGES ON THE Bible News Prophecy channel. There are also some messages at the CCOGAfrica channel. There are also messages in the Spanish language at the CDLIDDSermones channel.
World News Items
On Monday, Pope Francis met with Methodist leaders at the Vatican as part of his ecumenical agenda. Francis, along with many Protestant leaders as well as the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, are hoping that 2025 will bring more unity among trinitarians who have accepted decisions from the two imperial church councils of the 4th century (see Pope Francis met with Methodist leaders in promoting Babylonian unity and the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea). Plans for Babylonian unity are moving forward.
Someone sent me a link to an article about mirror-image bacteria that some scientists are working on developing (see ‘Scientists Warn of Unstoppable Threat from Lab-Created Mirror Bacteria’ possible connection to the 4th horseman of the Apocalypse? ). Whether because of scientific tinkering, plans for biological warfare, various living habits, and/or the consumption of unclean animals, we know that deadly pestilences are coming (cf. Matthew 24:7; Revelation 6:7-8). And yes, human actions look to be the cause.
It has been asserted that Donald Trump’s reelection will be a nightmare for Europe. I would suggest that it will be a nightmare for some, but a motivator which will encourage the Europeans to move more towards their prophetic destiny (see If Donald Trump is a nightmare for the European Union, what will happen?).
Speaking of nightmares, many in the USA have been concerned about large drones flying around. The reason that I have not written about this at the COGwriter.com website is that, from the beginning, this looked like something that the USA government was involved in that it was not being upfront about. Thus far, that looks to be the case.
Concluding Comments
Even though Jesus kept the biblical holy days and did not celebrate birthdays, many who claim to be His followers as well as many who do not make such a claim will be keeping the holiday set apart to celebrate the sun god Mithra next week on December 25th.
What does the Bible teach about the time of Jesus birth?
Here is a Roman Catholic-accepted translation of the account in the Gospel According to Luke:
1 Now it happened that at this time Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be made of the whole inhabited world. 2 This census — the first — took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria, 3 and everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.
4 So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee for Judaea, to David’s town called Bethlehem, since he was of David’s House and line, 5 in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 Now it happened that, while they were there, the time came for her to have her child, 7 and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the living-space.
8 In the countryside close by there were shepherds out in the fields keeping guard over their sheep during the watches of the night. 9 An angel of the Lord stood over them and the glory of the Lord shone round them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel said, ‘Do not be afraid. Look, I bring you news of great joy, a joy to be shared by the whole people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 And here is a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’
13 And all at once with the angel there was a great throng of the hosts of heaven, praising God with the words: 14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace for those he favours.
15 Now it happened that when the angels had gone from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go to Bethlehem and see this event which the Lord has made known to us.’ 16 So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. 17 When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, 18 and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them. (Luke 2:1-18, NJB)
Notice that, at the time of the census, Luke teaches that the shepherds were out all night in the field at the time of Jesus’ birth. This is biblical evidence that Jesus could not have been born in late December for a couple of reasons. One of them is that the practice of shepherds spending the night with their flocks outside ceased each Fall.
Consider also that we are told by Luke that we can rely on the verity (certainty, NKJV) of his writings:
3 It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4 That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed. (Luke 1:3-4, DRB).
Furthermore, related to the reason that Joseph had to go to Bethlehem (the census) at the time of Jesus’ birth, even The Catholic Encyclopedia admits that the “census would have been impossible in winter” (Christmas, 1908). If something is impossible, then it did not happen.
Therefore, we can have certainty that December 25th was not possibly the day that Jesus was born.
Consider further that Jesus said:
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)
The truth is that Jesus was not born on December 25th and no early Christian celebrated His birthday.
Most of the symbols associated with Christmas are either pagan or otherwise based on lies.
(Pixabay photo)
Those are facts.
Here is a list of 25 things Christians should consider who wonder about observing Christmas:
- In Leviticus 23, God lists His festivals–with specific dates.
- In Jeremiah 10, God says not to follow pagan practices, such as using a decorated tree, in the worship of Him.
- Nowhere in the Bible is the date of Jesus’ birth mentioned.
- Scripture opposes the view that Jesus could have been born in late December because the “census would have been impossible in winter” per The Catholic Encyclopedia and because shepherds were not spending the night outside with their flocks then.
- Nowhere in the Bible is anyone instructed to observe the date of Jesus’ birth.
- The Bible does not show that Jesus’ disciples ever observed the date of Jesus’ birth.
- At the time of Christ, observant Jews did not celebrate birthdays, nor did early Christians.
- The Apostle Paul wrote that Christians were not to use demonic pagan practices (1 Corinthians 10:20).
- Christmas was NOT part of the ‘faith once for all delivered to the saints’ (Jude 3).
- Early church writings do not show that any Christian observed the date of Jesus’ birth.
- The sun god Mithras was allegedly born on December 25th as the season was celebrated as the rebirth of the sun.
- Pagans celebrated the sun-god Mithras and the god of agriculture Saturn in late December each year with lights, wreaths, parties, and gift-giving.
- About 2 centuries after Jesus was born, Tertullian wrote that people in what we would now call the Eastern and Roman Catholic churches, used wreaths and lights, gave gifts, etc. in late December to be like the heathen. Pagan worship really is the “reason for the season.”
- Tertullian condemned those practices as demonic and idolatrous and further wrote that those who professed Christ should not honor pagan gods in their worship.
- The pagan Emperor Constantine worshiped the sun-god Mithras and celebrated Jesus’ birth on December 25th starting in 336 A.D.
- Roman pontiffs followed Emperor Constantine’s lead and in 354 A.D., Bishop Liberius of Rome ordered the people to celebrate on December 25.
- The anti-Semite Constantinople Bishop John Chrysostom, who opposed the biblical holy days, got a December 25th celebration adopted in his area by 395 A.D.
- The word for Christmas in late Old English is Cristes Maesse, the Mass of Christ, first found in 1038, and Cristes-messe, in 1131. It most certainly did not come from the Bible.
- The “twelve days of Christmas” originally came from the 12 days of Yuletide which began at sunset on December 20, known as Mother Night, and ended on the night of December 31, the Night of the Oak King and the Roman day of Hecate.
- Mistletoe came from the pagan Druids.
- Yule logs were originally a scandal to the Church of Rome, but were later embraced.
- Roman Catholics originally condemned Protestantism as the “Tannenbaum religion” because of what are called Christmas trees. But now Vatican City prominently displays one each year.
- It is wrong to bear false witness, including telling lies about the mythological Santa Claus.
- Christmas is NOT a biblical nor truly a Christ-centered holiday. It is a sentimental and commercialized pagan tradition.
- The Apostle Paul warned Christians that they were not above God’s wrath for combing pagan traditions with Christian practices (1 Corinthians 10:21).
Christmas is a distraction from the Gospel of the Kingdom of God.
It has the wrong emphasis and is not based on truth.
So brethren, try to not let the world’s emphasis on pagan celebrations affect you as we seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33) and strive to live by every word of God (cf. Matthew 4:4).
Remember, Christians say No to Christmas.
Sincerely,
Bob Thiel
